The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced nine companies selected to conduct trials as part of the fourth round of the Freight Innovation Fund Accelerator.

These businesses will receive nearly £1.1 million to test innovative technologies which could transform the face of freight and logistics in the UK, through the Government’s Freight Innovation Fund.

Royal Mail rolls out fleet of new electric HGVs

Royal Mail has rolled out its first fleet of eight electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (eHGVs) at its Midlands and North West Parcel Hubs.

The eight DAF 42-tonne XD 350E electric HGVs will handle ‘middle-mile’ deliveries between parcel hubs and mail centres.

Each vehicle will be powered by ABB’s high-performance T360 chargers, capable of adding up to 60 miles of range in under 15 minutes.

Tarmac has announced plans to launch a fleet of electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (eHGVs) for transporting cement, asphalt, aggregates and concrete blocks for the construction industry, alongside a new electric charging network to support them.

As part of a collaboration with Renault Trucks and DAF Trucks, the five new vehicles will be the first eHGVs to transport these essential construction materials to major infrastructure projects across London and the South East.

The UK logistics industry is urging ministers to keep low carbon fuel (LCF) as part of the solution to reduce emissions from heavy road freight, warning that the current trajectory to decarbonise commercial vehicles is “highly ambitious”.

Practical constraints such as the high cost of battery electric HGVs and reduced payloads, in addition to costs and time associated with installing grid upgrades are blocking progress on decarbonisation.

New zero emission HGV uptake has quadrupled by 341.2% to 225 units in the third quarter of 2025, a new record volume, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This demand has driven year-to-date ZEV volumes to 408 units, up 145.8% compared with the same period in 2024.

Salford City Council has acquired its first all-electric refuse collection vehicle (RCV), a 27-tonne Mercedes-Benz eEconic.

The eEconic combines zero emissions with a high payload capacity similar to the diesel Econic and a range of at least 93 miles in refuse operations, suitable for its stop-start urban refuse collection.

The eEconic was selected after an extensive evaluation programme when it completed daily rounds on a single charge and returned to the depot with 40–60% spare battery capacity.
