New diesel cars can drastically exceed their legal limits of emissions when cleaning their diesel particulate filters, research by Transport & Environment (T&E) found.

The tests of the Nissan Qashqai and Opel Astra were 32% to 115% over the legal limit for particles when they cleaned their filters in the independent tests. But a loophole means that the legal limit does not apply when filter cleaning occurs in official testing, meaning that 60-99% of regulated particle emissions from the tested vehicles are ignored.

According to reports, Honda Motor plans to phase out all diesel cars In Europe by 2021 in favour of electric drivetrains, which the Japanese manufacturer aims to include in all of its European cars by 2025.

Honda's long-term goal is to make electric cars account for two-thirds of its line up by 2030 from less than 10 per cent currently.

Next year, EU emission targets mean CO2 must be cut to 95g/km. All new cars in the EU must be compliant in 2021.
