Battery electric car demand rises 39.1% in June

Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped 39.1% to 47,354 units this June, equivalent to a quarter (24.8%) of the market, according to the latest SMMT figures.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) meanwhile grew 28.8% to 21,382 units. The market for new hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), meanwhile, fell by -8.5% to 23,835 registrations.

Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by 25.8% in May, accounting for 21.8% of the market, the latest SMMT figures show.

Despite this, however, BEV registrations year-to-date have only reached 20.9% market share – still seven percentage points off the 28% mandated by regulation. The SMMT says that heavy discounting by manufacturers is driving the growth, but that such measures are "unsustainable".

New battery electric vehicle uptake rose 21.8% in February 2024 to account for 17.7% of registrations, an improvement on last year’s 16.5%, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) recorded the largest proportional growth for the month, rising 29.1% to reach 7.2% of the market.

Fleet sales of battery electric vehicles rise 50.6% in September

Fleets are continuing to drive up sales of new battery electric vehicles in September, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals.

Overall, the UK new car market grew 21.0% in September with 272,610 registrations in the month, with the new number plate delivering its traditional market surge.

The growth was continued to be driven by large fleets, which rose 40.8% to 143,256 units to reach a market share of 52.5%.

UK new car registrations fell -89% in May, according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Some 20,247 cars were registered in the month, as ‘click and collect’ services allowed for some movement in the market. However, with 163,477 fewer registrations than in the same month last year, the performance still marked the lowest May since 1952.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) demand has more than doubled in January, up +111.1% to 4,788 units, according to SMMT figures. Hybrid electric cars (HEVs) increased by +20.6%, with 8,941 hitting British roads, and battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, continued to surge, up 203.9% to 4,054 units and a 2.7% market share.

Combined, alternatively fuelled vehicle registrations reached 11.9% of the market in January – the highest on record, up from 6.8% in the same month last year.

Demand for the latest battery electric cars surged by 228.8 per cent in November, with 4,652 registered, according to figures by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The markets for plug-in hybrids and hybrids also rose by 34.8 per cent and 15.0 per cent respectively. Elsewhere, petrol grew 2.0 per cent, making up the majority of registrations (62.2%), as diesel fell -27.2 per cent.

Overall, the UK new car market fell -1.3% in November, with 156,621 models registered.
