Information around how to safely purchase, charge and use e-bikes and e-scooters has been published by the government.

Following extensive consultation with industry, guidance on battery safety for both e-scooters and e-bikes will raise awareness for owners on how to safely purchase an e-cycle or e-scooter, ensure it meets manufacturing requirements and is only bought from reputable sellers. The documents also cover safe storage and charging, the warning signs for fire risk and how to address them, and how to dispose of batteries responsibly.

Two electric bike loan schemes in Wales will receive additional funding for a further year, the Welsh Government has announced.

The E-Move scheme operated by Sustrans and Pedal Power’s ‘See Cycling Differently’ scheme have both been running successfully with the help of Welsh Government funding since 2021 and have seen significant numbers of people using their service.

Sustrans, offers a range of battery assisted electric bikes for free, on medium-term loan, for local residents who do not cycle regularly or find the cost of electric bikes a barrier to using them.

A leading entrepreneur has warned that Northern Ireland is continuing to miss out on the benefits of the ‘e-bike revolution' because of its antiquated laws.

Greg Wilson, founder of insurance comparison site CompareNI.com, says that the popularity of e-bikes is increasing dramatically in other parts of the UK, and since June of this year commuters can even benefit from tax breaks under the UK's Cycle to Work scheme.

The government has updated its Cycle to Work guidance, which is an initiative to encourage employees to cycle to work, which can reduce transport emissions, congestion and improve fitness.

The Scheme offers employees the opportunity to get a new bike and accessories, tax-free.

The refreshed guidance will make it easier for employers to provide bicycles and equipment including e-bikes worth over £1,000, by making it clear that FCA authorised third party providers are able to run the scheme on their behalf.

A third round of funding to encourage the adoption of e-bikes has been announced by the Scottish Government.

Delivered by the Energy Saving Trust, the scheme helps assist local authorities, public sector agencies, further and higher education institutions, active travel hubs and community groups to adopt e-bikes and e-cargo bikes as more sustainable alternatives to car journeys.

For 2019/2020, £1.14m has been allocated to finance the eBike Grant Fund.
