Electric Vehicles UK (EVUK) brought its EV Ride-Along programme to the Labour Party Conference this week to give parliamentarians, councillors and policy leaders the chance to ride in a selection of the latest electric vehicles.

Guests from across Merseyside rode in a range of new and used BEVs, spoke with experienced drivers and industry experts, and saw firsthand how battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are cheaper and better.

Teignbridge District Council has taken delivery of a new EV fleet comprising Ford E-Transit tippers and Vauxhall Vivaro E-Prime vans.

The vehicles, which are expected to reduce the council’s carbon emissions by 58 tonnes a year, are part of the council’s ongoing contract hire agreement with its fleet partner SFS involving the supply of 56 vehicles including Refuse Collection Vehicles, kerbside recycling vehicles, vans and a sweeper for street cleansing.

New Freedom of Information (FOI) data researched by Geotab has revealed a gaps in electric vehicle adoption across government bodies in the major UK cities.

The data, obtained from FOI requests submitted to seven UK city councils and Transport for London (TfL), shows wide disparities in the percentage of electric vehicles in local authority fleets.

Maidstone Borough Council has deployed two new all-electric IVECO eDaily beavertails to its fleet, which are being used by its Environmental Services section to maintain the borough’s grounds and greens.

With a two-battery configuration, providing up to 124 miles of range and 140hp, the 4.25t eDaily delivers a perfect combination of payload and range. Since they were integrated into the fleet, the council reports that over 2,000kg of CO2 has been prevented from entering the atmosphere.

Government departments and their arms-length bodies have until the end of May to apply for an exemption from the requirement to switch to a zero emission fleet.

The UK Government has a commitment to convert its fleet of petrol and diesel cars and vans to zero emission vehicles by 2027. This includes government departments and arms-length bodies, including fleets operated by National Highways and the Environment Agency.

Local authorities, Crown Dependencies, devolved administrations, and Overseas Territories are not included in the commitment.

A new Public Sector Fleet Operator Working Group is being launched by the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) and will meet for the first time in January.

Led by AFP board member and national fleet manager at National Highways, Martin Edgecox, it is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss the particular concerns facing public sector fleet management.

Welsh government and FleetEV secure deal for 300 EVs

Cardiff-based FleetEV has agreed a fleet deal with the Welsh Government to supply 300 vehicles, including cars, vans, and specially adapted vehicles to a variety of regions across Wales.

It is expected to deliver savings of £660,000, and is estimated to be the largest collaborative procurement of electric vehicles.

FleetEV, formerly known as Fleet-e, was formed in 2021, and works with local and national clients including Resource Group, Chargy, The Bunch, and Credas.
