The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) is urging fleets to make their views about private parking known through a new government consultation.

The AFP recently ran a webinar on the growing issue of parking fines and members were encouraged to respond to the review on a new private parking code of practice.

Westminster City Council is introducing emissions-based charging for residents and visitors who drive into the city.

The new schemes will be introduced for residents with parking permits and people who pay-to-park in Westminster.

The new emissions-based charging schemes will see vehicles being charged based on their levels of CO2 emissions. Vehicles that produce lower levels of CO2 will be charged less in comparison to those which produce more.

The changes are designed to help Westminster reach its goal of a Net Zero City by 2040 and tackle poor air quality.

Over half of new vehicles are too wide for many on-street parking spaces. Paris will vote on tripling parking fees for SUVs on 4 February.

New research from Transport & Environment (T&E) has found that new cars in Europe are getting on average one cm wider every two years.

Around half of new cars sold are already too wide for the minimum on-street parking space in many countries.

Paris could be the first major European capital to tackle this trend if citizens endorse higher parking charges for SUVs in a referendum next month.

The government has withdrawn its plans for a Private Parking Code of Practice, pending review of the levels of private parking charges and additional fees.

The code, which was initially announced in February, aimed to end some bad practices in the private parking sector and protect drivers. There were plans to cap private parking fines to £50 – down from £100. Fines up to £100 would only remain for those who parked in Blue Badge bays without a badge.

Parking platform YourParkingSpace.co.uk has partnered with environmental consultants Circular Ecology, to announce the launch of what it claims is the world’s very first carbon neutral car park of its kind.

The car park, which is run on 100% renewable energy, is located at YourParkingSpace’s London based offices, Republic London, and is the first car park to fully offset carbon emissions from drivers parking at the premises, by finding an equivalent amount of carbon savings.

Online parking portal YourParkingSpace.co.uk has highlighted that commuters could avoid additional yearly charges for workplace parking following new legislation if they use rented driveways.

The Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) is a charge on employers who provide 11 or more workplace parking places. However, because it is at the employer’s discretion as to whether they absorb the charge or not, it may result in the employee picking up the bill.

The government is set to consult on proposals to ban pavement parking.

The 12-week consultation will include options such as allowing local authorities with civil parking enforcement powers to crack down on unnecessary obstruction of the pavement. Currently, outside London, only police have this power.
